Ilandag (Snake Mountain)

Изображение
The  Ilandag Mountain  has turned into the symbol of Julfa region and the whole of Nakhchivan. The name of the mountain means “ Snake Mountain “, because this high mountain, which can bee see from everywhere in Julfa, is full of poisonous reptiles. Now time  Ilandag  – Snake Mountain became natural trademark of Nakhchivan, you can see this almost everywhere. Its distinctive cleft peak, naturally, has legend attached to it: as the flood began to subside, Noah’s Ark crashed through the surfacing summit on the way to Mount Gamigaya, east Nakhchivan, in a reversal of the route normally related in the west, which has Agri Dag as the final landing.

Gusts of wind in this place are strong, they blow the jet to the left, then, to the right, the drops fly in all directions

It was constructed in 1761-1762 as a summer residence of Hussein-khan Mushtad (grandson of Gadzhi Chelebi). The unique beauty two-storied building of the palace amazes with its magnificent interior and exterior. The facade of the palace is richly painted with anecdotal drawings displaying scenes of hunting and war as well as intricate geometrical and vegetative patterns. In the center is a huge stained-glass window from a multi-colored glass mosaic (It is remarkable up to 5 , 000 glass pieces were used per one square meter). Maiden Tower

Изображение
The Maiden Tower is the symbol of Baku and it is located in the southeastern part of Icherisheher. This monument, with its uncommon form, is unique in the world for its giant cylinder shape which is 28 meters in height.  At the base of the monument, the tower walls are 5 meters thick and 4 meters thick on the top level.. The tower has 8 arches which divide it into 8 floors. The monument, built between the VIII-VIth centuries BC, acted as a temple and played an important role in the fortification of Baku during the Middle Ages.

Ateshgah

Изображение
All who have been at Baku, and almost all who have heard of Baku, know of the Temple of Eternal Fire Ateshgah (Atashgah), located 20 kilometers east of the town center. The territory is known thanks to such a unique nature phenomenon as ever burning outburst of natural gas (bursting out gas contacts wit oxygen and catches fire).  Ateshgah , as it looks today, was built in the 17 th  – 18 th centuries. The place is easily reached by driving, or better by rail with a short spin in a phaeton afterwards. Common tradition has long associated the one-time sanctity of this region with the veneration of the so-called Zoroastrian Fire-worshipers, though whether with absolute justice must remain to be seen.

Yeddi Gumbez

Изображение
The name of Seven Domes or Yeddi Gumbez – the monument was named after the number of Shirvan rulers’ mausoleums-tombs built here in 18th-19th centuries. Other mausoleums of the group are partly destroyed and are without cupola or walls. Specifically, in the seven tombs, there are the remains of Mustafa Khan’ family, the last Shamakhi Khan. Each tomb has 3-4 graves with massive tombstones. This ancient monument is protected by the state.

Alinjagala

Изображение

There are more than a thousand historical and cultural monuments, about sixty of which have global significance status, including the fortress city Alinjagala (Alinja Tower / Alinja Fortress). It is located on the eponymous mountain near the town of Julfa (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic), and was presumably built in 6-8 centuries.

Duzdag cave

Изображение
The most illustrious and well appointed of place in Azerbaijan is Duzdag , burrowed into a peak a 15-minute drive outside of Nakhchivan. Between 2006-2011, a joint Azerbaijani-French archeological expedition conducted research in Nakhchivan and concluded that the Duzdag mines (“Duz Dag” – salt mountain) are, most likely, the oldest in the world. A 300-meter long tunnel so salt-rich that it’s all but crumbles when touched, Duzdag is famous largely due to the legends associated with it and for the ease of access created by its horizontal structure. Also, it is stunningly well-appointed: Bare halls have been adorned with marble latticework and wooden lodges have been built into the salt walls. All of the rooms – there are around 300 beds available – in the tunnel’s nine galleries are equipped with hotel amenities, and the broader complex includes recreational facilities. As a bonus, the entire treatment is bespoke for each patron. Most people come to stay for five- t...

Yanar Dag (Fire Mountain)

Изображение
In the 13th century, when Marco Polo visited the then-Persian city of Baku, he mentioned numerous mysterious flames that could be found all over the region at various places of the Absheron Peninsula. These fires gave Azerbaijan the moniker “Land of Fire.” Yanar Dag or the Fire Mountain is one of the magically attractive sites, which surprises and enchants visitors. It seems like a brilliant sparkling on the mountain surface. People have always regarded the magnificent view of Yanar Dag as something “sacred”. Fire Mountain , situated on the Absheron Peninsula some 25 kilometers northeast of the capital city Baku, is also known as Pilpila, Bozdag, Ahtarma and Gynarja. It is a 116-meter hill with a continuous natural gas fire eruption, which jets out into the air three meters high from a porous sandstone layer.
